Phrasing
In short
Mixing in step with the musical phrases, so changes land where the ear expects them.
Dance music is built in blocks: bars group into fours, eights and sixteens, and the changes that matter — the kick coming in, the breakdown starting — land at the beginning of a block rather than in the middle of one. Phrasing is mixing in step with those blocks.
When you get it right, nobody notices, and that is exactly the goal. When you get it wrong, every booth has a word for the result: the set limps. The two tracks can be perfectly matched in BPM and in key and still sound wrong, because one is half a block out of step with the other and every change lands where the ear was not waiting for it.
It is the part of mixing software does not solve for you. A sync button aligns the pulse, not the phrases: you can have the beats locked and the structure offset. This is where cue points earn their keep — they exist in large part to mark where a block starts so you can come in exactly there.
It is also why a good track order does not guarantee a good set. EnergyCurve works on order and compatibility; where you start the mix inside each track stays yours.
