B2B

In short

Back to back: two or more DJs playing one set, taking turns track by track.

B2B is back to back: two or more DJs playing a single set, taking turns. One track each is the usual arrangement, though two at a time or longer stretches are common too.

What changes compared with playing alone is not the technique, it is the planning. Nobody controls the whole sequence: you pick your track knowing what the other one left you, and they pick theirs knowing what you left them. The set's energy curve is the result of two sets of judgement, and they do not always agree.

Hence the typical failures. The escalation, where each answers by going a little higher and twenty minutes later there is nowhere left to go. The lack of continuity, where both play good tracks that do not talk to each other. And the context disagreement, which is the worst: one is playing a warm-up and the other a peak time, in the same set.

Almost all of it is solved by talking first: which slot this is, how high it goes, who opens. Preparing separately and agreeing on the overall shape is the difference between a B2B that sounds like a set and one that sounds like two people taking turns.
